Design is a popular field nowadays because it is inextricably linked to almost every aspect of our daily life. Outstanding design is crucial to the success of many industries, ranging from computer engineering, technological development, spatial arrangement, business administration, educational model, publication, communication to tourism. This is of particular importance in the era of globalization and within a competitive international market. Promoting art and design effectively follows the vision of the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area” and “One-Belt-One-Road” concept and policy by the Central Government. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance jointly launched and implemented “The Plan for Enhancing the Power of Innovation in Higher Education” (abbreviated as “2011 Plan”) in 2012, with the aim to further develop higher education and increase innovative capacity. The plan encourages higher education institutions, the government, businesses and industries to collaborate in order to promote market creativity and develop new products to accelerate economic growth. The key objective is to achieve significant, high-quality research outcomes through the mechanism of collaborative partnerships. Following the launch of the plan, numerous higher education institutions and research institutes have established their collaborative innovation centres. The Macao SAR government is also committed to cross-disciplinary innovations. The Macao SAR’s Five-year Development Plan (2016-2020) articulates the commitment of “persistence in making the nurturing of talents as the key to support innovation, striving to construct an innovation network that interconnects education, research and industry, promoting the innovative use of information technology for development, and driving the rise of innovation in related fields.”
